State of the World Project

Each year the President of the United States delivers a State of the Union Address to Congress. In this speech, he reports on the condition of the nation and outlines the direction he believes Congress should move into the near future.

Your job is to learn about and evaluate the State of the World. To do this, you should read current event articles that discuss major developments in current events across each of Earth’s human regions. Current events might be related to a variety of aspects of the world’s conditions including, but not limited to, military, economic, political, social, medical, and religious.

You do not need to become an expert in current events, but you do need to understand the basics about at least one significant current event for each human region of the world.

As part of your assessment of the state of the world, you should also take into consideration “current events” in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. What are some recent developments (from the past 20 or so years) in the Church? (For example, what developments have there been in family history and temple work, in missionary work, in humanitarian service, in Church communications, etc.?)

Please select ONE of the following formats for organizing and presenting your findings:
  • A newspaper
  • A written or video-recorded speech
  • A collage or map with detailed captions/labels

Whatever format you choose, please make sure that your report on the State of the World includes the following:
  1. A brief characterization of each world region (What cultural characteristics are predominant in that region?)
  2. A description of major world current events for each world region
  3. A description of Church “current events”
  4. Your conclusions about the overall state of the world
  5. Specific recommendations for how a young person like yourself can be a Christian citizen in the world and kingdom of God

Please ensure that your State of the World project is professional in appearance, accurate, and thoughtful.

DUE DATE: Thursday, Sept. 4
